CDAS represents the full range of leading participants in the motion picture industry, from writers, directors, actors and producers to financiers, commercial and non-commercial lenders, sales agents and distributors.
Our work in this area involves all phases of motion picture development, production and exploitation, and includes both narrative and documentary filmmaking. We help our producer clients acquire and develop material. CDAS’s services include providing analysis and advice in connection with all areas of rights clearance, including fair use and privacy rights for documentary films. We also represent our talent clients, in collaboration with their other representatives, in negotiations for the engagement of their rights and services for independent and major studio productions.
CDAS works closely with our producer, financier, and lender clients to structure, document and execute both basic and complex film financings, often involving international components. We provide responsive and cost-effective production counsel services, and have established an incubator program to support a select number of emerging filmmakers with production legal packages.
Our lawyers help the firm’s clients navigate the rapidly changing distribution landscape by offering creative rights windows between platforms and media, providing advice and counsel on festival and distribution strategies and the negotiation and documentation of all forms of distribution agreements. Even after the customary revenue producing life-span of a motion picture, there are often continuing legal issues with copyrights, library sales, archive agreements and film preservation, and we work with the owners of motion picture rights with respect to these kinds of issues on an ongoing basis.
Our attorneys attend major film festivals and markets, take part in industry conferences and seminars as presenters and panelists, and often guest teach at leading university and professional educational institutions.
